The Removal Of Music Programs - 920 Words
In the last decade America has had to deal with the difficult economical down turns in order to stay above water in many businesses. The education field has had to make its own internal adjustments to keep afloat economically. ââ¬Å"Funds have been cut in more than 80 percent of U.S. school districts since 2008. The very first programs to get cut are often disciplines such as music.â⬠(Boyd). The removal of music programs can seem to be a reasonable response to the lack of revenue, but what is the real cost? Music is not a peripheral side subject that has so real meaning in the development of a person. Playing music is beneficial to a student in many ways. It develops a studentââ¬â¢s emotional health. It develops the self-confidence of a studentâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦A few chords, a verse, and a catchy melody can even put little more pep in a personââ¬â¢s step as they go through their day. Receiving approval after playing in front of a live audience can be amazin gly inspirational for our youth. The discipline of music develops the emotional health and confidence of a person therefore creating a positive benefit to our society. Music strengthens a studentââ¬â¢s memorization and comprehension skills as much, if not more, than any core subject they participles in at school. Playing an instrument is cognitively taxing. Notes and fret patterns not only requires memorization to be played in a song, but also promote hand eye coordination. Math is analogous to music. In math class a student learns how to problem solve by memorizing a sequential order. Musicians use the same method for learning a new song. According to a study published in the journal Psychology of Music ââ¬Å"Children exposed to a multi-year program of music tuition involving training in increasingly complex rhythmic, tonal, and practical skills display superior cognitive performance in reading skills compared with their non-musically trained peers.â⬠As this research indicates studentââ¬â¢s cognitive abilities are positively impacted by their participation in music training.
